Caffeic Acid is a constituent of plants, probably occurs in plants only in conjugated forms. Caffeic acid is found in all plants because it is a key intermediate in the biosynthesis of lignin, one of the principal sources of biomass. Caffeic acid is one of the main natural phenols in argan oi.
Caffeic acid, an organic acid, the formula C9H8O4, molecular weight 180.15, is obtained as yellow crystals from a concentrated aqueous solution, to give a monohydrate from dilute aqueous solutions. Decomposition point 223~225°(soften at 194°). Slightly soluble in water, soluble in hot water and cold ethanol. It can be used safely in cosmetics and has a wide range of antibacterial and antiviral activities. Can absorb ultraviolet light. Function
1. Antibacterial and antiviral: It has a wide range of antibacterial effects, but it can be inactivated by protein in the body. In vitro tests showed antiviral activity against vaccinia and adenovirus strong inhibitory effect, followed by polio type I and parainfluenza virus typeIII.
