Anticancer Effect
Matrine has been shown to inhibit the growth of various cancer cells in vitro, such as non-small cell lung cancer (A549 cells) and liver cancer (SMMC-7721 cells). By reducing the Bcl-2/Bax protein ratio in cancer cells, Matrine can induce cancer cell apoptosis.
Antioxidant Stress Effect
Matrine is capable of reducing the levels of intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS), thereby alleviating oxidative stress damage.
Anti-inflammatory Effect
Matrine can inhibit the production of proinflammatory cytokines, such as IL-1β, IL-6, and TNF-α, thereby reducing inflammatory responses.
Anti-apoptotic Effect (with Clarification)
In certain circumstances, Matrine can promote cell apoptosis by inhibiting mechanisms such as mitochondrial autophagy and the PINK1/Parkin pathway. However, this effect depends on specific cell types and experimental conditions.
