Antispasmodic Effect: Swertiamarin has an inhibitory effect on the spontaneous rhythmic activity of isolated ileum, uterus, gallbladder smooth muscle, and biliary sphincter of experimental animals. It can also counteract the excitatory effects of acetylcholine, histamine, norepinephrine, barium chloride, and pituitrin on these tissues and organs.
Analgesic Effect: Swertiamarin significantly inhibits the central nervous system, exhibiting notable analgesic and sedative effects. Its analgesic and antispasmodic properties constitute the pharmacological basis for treating gastrointestinal pain.
Hepatoprotective Effect: Studies have shown that swertiamarin possesses hepatoprotective, detoxifying, enzyme-lowering, and spleen-reducing properties. It also enhances the phagocytic function of macrophages in the liver region. Furthermore, it can reduce the damage caused by toxic substances to the liver, prevent liver injury induced by hypoxia, and exhibit a significant inhibitory effect on liver cancer cells.
Other Effects: Swertiamarin exhibits a range of pharmacological effects, including antioxidant, antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, anticancer, antimutagenic properties, as well as regulating the immune system and lowering blood lipids and cholesterol.
